Pyritized Ammonites from Ryazan City Region, Russia. (Price for piece!)
Pyritized ammonites are fascinating fossils that captivate both paleontologists and enthusiasts alike. These ancient marine creatures, part of the mollusk family, lived millions of years ago during the Mesozoic era. What makes pyritized ammonites particularly remarkable is their preservation process. Instead of typical fossilization where organic material is replaced by minerals, pyritization occurs when the remains are encased in iron sulfide, commonly known as fool's gold or pyrite. This unique preservation often retains intricate details of the shell's structure, showcasing the spiral chambers and ornate ridges characteristic of ammonites. The shimmering metallic sheen of pyrite adds to their allure, making them prized specimens for collectors and valuable assets for scientific study. Through these fossils, researchers gain insights into ancient marine ecosystems, evolutionary adaptations, and the geological history of our planet. Pyritized ammonites thus serve as invaluable windows into the distant past, offering a glimpse into the world as it was millions of years ago.

Absolutely wonderful pyrite ammonite. Love that the outside is intact while the cut is superbly polished. Love it.
